Learning outcomes:
As a result of studying discipline the student should know:
• physical and mechanical properties of steels with different States of the microstructure;
• influence of alloying of steel with various chemical elements on its physical and mechanical properties;
• ways of making steel of different chemical elements.
The student should be able to:
• analyze the requirements to physical and mechanical properties of the part to select the optimal method of modification of its structure or alloying of the surface.
• develop the process.

Summary of the subject:
The physical aspects of strengthening. The modification of the surface and surface alloying. Laser surface treatment. Surface treatment with electron beam. Plasma surface treatment. Ultrasonic consolidation. Surface plastic deformation. Combined methods of hardening. The choice of materials. Durable materal. Friction and antifriction materials. Corrosion-resistant materials. The formation of amorphous and nanocrystalline layers.
