The Department of Marketing and Logistics was established in 1945 in the structure of the profile economic Department of Industrial Economics and Production Organization. After a few reorganizations in 1964 a department entitled “Economics and organization of chemical industry and energetics” was founded which was renamed in 1996 into the Department of economics energetic and chemical enterprises and marketing. From the very beginning of the Department encompassed chemical and energetic majors teaching the following academic disciplines: “Economics of industry”, “Organization, planning and managing of the enterprise”. Since 1962 the Department has been training economists in two specialities: economic engineers for energetics, economic engineers for chemical industry. The first turn out in these specialities was in 1968. Starting from 1971 the Department has also been training economic engineers for building materials industry. The Department has released more than 1950 economic engineers in the above mentioned specialities.
In 1993 the training of personnel in economics of the new formation — managers of production field (in energetic industry) commenced at the Department and a year later the training of marketing specialists following the curriculums consistent with the standarts of free market economy.
At the same time the intensification of globalization processes and european integration, the complications of managing of material, finance and data steam, the ever growing unproductive nonproductive expenses bring up the problem of training specialist managers in logistics and the solving of which has begun the one of the most perspective challenges of the Department.
Opportunely as the response to the dynamics upgrowth of the labor market in Ukraine the department staff since 2000 has began the training of specialists in specialty 7.050108.06 Logistics within the major Marketing, accordind to the letter of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine from 31.08.1999.
Current needs for specialists reflected in the change of the name of the Department, which today is called The Department of Marketing and Logistics. Since 2002, the department trains specialists in field of Management in speciality 8.050208 Logistics.
The Department staff was one of the first in Ukraine who switched to a degree system of education: as long ago as 1995 the experimental master’s programs for individual training schedules were established, and since 1996 the first masters in Marketing and Management were turned out.
Since 1996, the department is preparing a masters in the field of Management in major Management in the manufacturing sector (now it is called Organization Management) and in the field of Economics and Entrepreneurship in major Marketing. Since 2004, the department has began the training of masters in the speciality Logistics.
The expediency of training specialists of these fields and majors in the Department of Marketing and Logistics is confirmed both with employment characteristics and forecasts of such specialists need in enterprises and organizations of the region.
In addition, the Department is preparing Bachelors and Specialists of Engineering in the newly created in 2001 institutes, which are based on former faculties: Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technology (ICCT), Institute of Power Engineering and Control Systems (IPECS), Institute of Distance Education (IDE). These institutes are operating in the structure of Lviv Polytechnic National University, where the Department faculty teach such basic economics disciplines as Business Economics and Marketing, The Theory of Economic Analysis, Economy and Management of Energy Use, Enterprise Economics, Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship, Management and Marketing, Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship and Organization of Petroleum Refining Industry, Business Plan Construction (Reconstruction) of Power Projects, Organization and Planning of Electrotechnical Production.
36 lecturers of the Department faculty are directly working on training experts. Among them, 5 Sc.D., professors, including 2 people of staff; 19 Ph.D., associate professors; 3 Ph.D., senior teachers.
