The Department of Physical Education was established in 1944. For this time the department’s staff gained the considerable athletic achievements and brought up a large number of high-skilled sportsmen.
Students of the Lviv Polytechnic National University - participants of the Olympic Games:

- Oleksii Demianiuk (IEMT) - Athletics, Moscow 1980;
- Dmytro Demianiuk (IARCH ) - Athletics, Beijing 2008;
- Oleksandr Didukh (IEM) - Table tennis, London 2012.
Among the university students there are 121 candidate masters of sports, 40 masters of sports, 3 international masters of sport. Students-sportsmen are included to the ranks of the National and the Youth teams of Ukraine.

- Hnievyshev Mykyta (IEM ) - Karate Kiukushinkaj.
Students - sportsman of the Lviv Polytechnic National University as members of the national teams (different age categories) in sledding, fencing, orienteering and arm-wrestling, vindicated the honor of Ukraine at the World Championships in 2014.
Motsyk Iryna (IEM) became a winner of the Ukrainian Cup in table tennis in 2014.

- Dukach Anton (ICTA) - Sledding;
- Bedzylia Ruslan (ICCT ) - Armwrestling;
- Pylypiv Markiian (IBEE) - Armwrestling;
- Vergeles Vitalii (IEMT) - Canoeing.
Also in 2014 university students were gaining the title of winners at the Ukrainian Championships in competitions of boxing, judo, powerlifting, orienteering, karate and archery.
Team sports:
- The university men’s team in basketball won in the all-Ukrainian student basketball league (coach - Associate Professor Zaverikin A. M.);
- The university women's team in table tennis (coach - Senior Teacher Tykhyi I.I.) became the silver medalist of the Ukrainian championship;
- Smoling Lesia (Institute of the Humanities and Social Sciences IHSS) and Savych Natalia (ICCT) as part of the handball club "Galychyna" took the second place of the Ukrainian higher league;
- 11 student-athletes as part of the Rugby club "Falcon" took the third place in the Ukrainian Championship.
In 2014 teams of the Lviv Polytechnic National University took ten first places in the Lviv Universiade.
