Learning outcomes:
• to know main principles, laws and regularity of general and molecular genetics;
• to know the structure and function of the genes, molecular organization of genetic processes, mechanisms of conservation, transfer and realization of genetic information, the importance of genetics as a theoretical basis of selection and biotechnology;
• to know cytogenetic methods, methods of human genetics, methods of somatic cell hybridization, methods of molecular genetics and genetic engineering;
• to be able to apply knowledge in practice during development and providing of technological processes in both traditional and modern biotechnology industries.

Prerequisites:
• General microbiology and virology;
• Cell biology;
• Biochemistry;
• Molecular biology.
Co-requisites:
• Theoretical foundations of immunology;
• Bioengineering (cell and genetic).
Summary of the subject:
Basic genetic concepts. Structure and functions of chromosomes. The laws of heredity. Mendel's laws. Gene interactions. Mechanisms of sex determination. Linkage groups and crossing-over. Patterns of cytoplasmic inheritance. Variability. Mutagenesis. Organism and population levels of genetic processes. Structure and functions of the gene. Genome organization in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Regulation of gene action. Genetic fundamentals of selection. Biological and social heredity. Gene pool protection.
